At Max's market, you will find anything you
like -- if you like gourmet foods, that is.
Max's has a nice pastry counter, containing
mostly tarts (strawberry rhubarb, lemon
meringue are examples) and
chibousts (layered tarts made of shortbread
crust, pastry cream, fruit, a thick layer
of flan and a transparent glazing). Look
for the excellent and nicely priced
kugelhopf when available.
Max's
also has lots of European
gourmet chocolate for sale, with the finest
brands
represented. Of note are Michel Cluizel
chocolates and chocolate bars; Michel
Cluizel is one of these rare chocolatiers that
make their own couverture chocolate, from
the cocoa beans. Max's Market also
has a bakery
section, with breads
from Ace
Bakery, and their own breads. Finally,
plenty of savory
goodies as well at the huge prepared foods
counter.
