Clafouti's French pastry chef makes an
entire line of
delicious tarts,
that come in individual or family size, at
friendly prices.
Examples are almond-pear,
apple, raspberry cream, chocolate ganache,
strawberry-rhubarb, lemon, and
even mirabelle
(a delicious tiny yellow plum from France).
The fillings are
very
good, and the crusts are suitably flaky and
buttery. The
clafouti
itself (a tart filled with a flan and wild
berries) is worth
trying. We couldn't resist the morning
pastries either: the
pains au
chocolat (chocolate croissants) are good
and
quite large. They sell out fast, so go early to catch them! Other
creative croissant flavours include chocolate-peanut butter, rose, cinnamon, fig, peach or
quince... The only disappointment is the macarons, they tend to be hard and dry, complete opposite of what a
good macaron should be.
Clafouti also has a small line of breads,
and serves light
lunches (croque
monsieurs,
crepes, sandwiches, etc... try for example the excellent
tomato boconcini pesto sandwich).

This is by far the best bakery experience I have ever had. Not sure why people had bad experiences with the staff before, but I have nothing but good experiences. They are helpful when I need help selecting something, have held onto tarts for me if I need something for later on, and even remember my favorites when I come in.

I think it's clear that Clafouti have a different take on the croissant, one that does not always please if your palate is accustomed to very light and flaky pastry, but it must be judged according to the makers' different intention. Adding sugar, cinnamon and jams and so on as fillings suggests that these croissants are far from being imitations of standard Paris fare, and for my part I really enjoy them.
